June Meeting Features ECOS on Planned Cordova Hills Development

The American River Democrats invite you to our June meeting, to be held Wednesday, June 19th at Samurai Sushi, 12251 Folsom Blvd (at Hazel and Hwy 50), Rancho Cordova, CA. We gather at 6:30 pm for dining and socializing, with the meeting beginning at 7 pm. Click here for the meeting agenda.

Our featured speaker will be Sean Wirth of the Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS). The mission statement of ECOS is:

To achieve regional and community sustainability and a healthy environment for existing and future residents. By working proactively with our members, member organizations, local government, and community groups, ECOS will energize and bring positive change to the Sacramento region as we strive to develop thriving communities.

Cordova Hills as of 2012.

When developers sought approval for a project, called Cordova Hills, that would turn almost 2,700 acres of undeveloped land into a community of over 21,000 people with more than one million square feet of retail/commercial construction, ECOS opposed their efforts to obtain approval from the County Board of Supervisors. In January the supervisors sided with developers and voted to allow the project to continue in spite of all the arguments against it.

On March 1, 2013, ECOS and the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit challenging Sacramento County’s approving the Cordova Hills project. Many aspects of the Cordova Hills project fail to meet the tests our region has already established to control sprawl and reduce air and other pollutants. You can read more about ECOS’ position on the Cordova Hills project at their website.

Wirth will talk to us about ECOS, its work, the Cordova Hills project, and how concerned citizens can help them continue to fight for a Sacramento County with a healthy balance of development and open space.

Our meetings are always open to the public and visitors are welcome. You may also join our club as a member so that you can vote on issues and for club officers.

Also at the meeting, we’ll hear from the Election Committee on the slate of candidates who have decided to seek a position on our Executive Board. Remember that club bylaws state you must be a paid member for one month before voting, so this meeting is your last chance to pay 2013 dues of $25 and have a vote in the July election.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!
